Soetkin Verhaegen is Postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Political Science at Stockholm University. Her research focusses on public opinion about international and regional organizations. Hence, her work is situated at the crossroads of political sociology and international relations.

As part of the LegGov – Legitimacy in Global Governance – research team, she studies sources of legitimacy of global governance institutions among both the general public and elites. Within this project, she coordinates the collection of over 700 elite interviews in 6 countries around the world, and in international organizations.

Additionally, Soetkin is affiliated to CESPOL at UC Louvain and to the RepResent – Representation and Democratic Resentment – project. Here, she uses focus groups and surveys to study citizens’ perceptions of legitimacy, alienation and resentment in the context of multilevel governance.

Previous work inquired the development of European identity, and its role as an explanation for citizens’ political orientations and behaviour towards the EU. Other research interests include youth, socialization and political participation.

Soetkin obtained her PhD from KU Leuven in 2015, for her dissertation on the development of European identity. Previously, Soetkin was visiting scholar at the LSE, she has been scientific advisor at Karel de Grote Hogeschool and she was a civic education teacher for Europe House Ryckevelde.

At the Department of Political Science, she teaches courses on European politics and quantitative research methods.
