Doctoral thesis project

During the last decade the number of women in public decision-making bodies has increased notably and so has research about women in politics. Today’s empirical as well as theoretical discussions concern either descriptive or substantial political representation, or supposed links between them. This relationship is complex and intricate. There seems nevertheless to be an overall acceptance of a link, even if there are no evident causal connections presented. In fact, research has found little evidence for a single relationship between the relative number of women and women’s substantive representation. In order to fully understand substantive representation, this project aims to understand how parliamentarian debates are gendered, and how these different frames work together to challenge and reproduce hegemonic outcomes since discourses, that is, the way we speak about politics, set the parameters for what is politically possible and what is not. Mexico is used as a case study.
