The Politics of Higher Education in a Comparative Perspective.
France, Sweden, United Kingdom
(Written in English)
Abstract
This is a comparative study of the national politics
of higher education in France, Sweden and the United Kingdom, with
an emphasis on developments during the 1960s and 1970s. The book
opens with a review of the two emerging research traditions to which
it relates: comparative public policy- as mostly practised by political
scientists and comparative higher education - a multidisciplinary
field still very much in its infancy. The first empirical chapter
compares the importance of higher education to the political agendas
of the three countries, while the next four chapters - the bulk
of the book - are relatively detailed investigations of four policy
dimensions: governance, size, structure and access, Each dimension
is analyzed with respect to policy contents, determinants, implementation
and impacts. In the concluding chapter of the study an attempt is
made to draw the pieces of the preceding empirical chapters together
and outline a dynamic view or model of higher education politics.
