I am Associate Professor at the Department of Government at Uppsala University, and Research Fellow at the Department of Political Science at Stockholm University. My research focuses on issues connected to democratic theory, representation, boundary-making, social contract theory, the state, freedom, popular sovereignty, the people and statelessness.

My first book, The An-Archical State: Logics of Legitimacy in the Social Contract Tradition (2004), sought to challenge the modern, and particularly the Hobbesian understanding of legitimate statehood from the perspective of subjectivity and freedom in Levinas and Arendt. In recent years, my research has come to specialize on how to think legitimacy and democracy under global political conditions. I am currently working on two book projects in relation to this: a monograph entitled The Legitimacy of People-Making and an edited volume entitled Political Equality in Transnational Democracy (co-edited).

I am participant in the collaborative research program Transdemos, and co-founder and associate editor of the international open-access journal Ethics & Global Politics.
