Anke Schmidt-Felzmann joined the Department of Political Science at Stockholm University in mid-September 2011 as a postdoctoral researcher with a two year research grant from Vetenskapsrådet (Swedish Research Council). While working on her own project she is participating in the activities of the Transaccess research group at Stockholm University, led by Jonas Tallberg (funded by the European Research Council) and the Transdemos research group which is based both at Stockholm University and Lund University (funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond).
Prior to joining Stockholm University Anke worked for two years as a full-time Lecturer in International Relations at Maastricht University (Netherlands) where she taught in the European Studies programme at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. She defended her PhD thesis at the University of Glasgow (Scotland, UK) and holds an MSc in International and European Politics from the University of Edinburgh (Scotland, UK). She also gained some work experience as an intern in several political institutions, including an In-Service Traineeship (Stage) at the DG External Relations of the European Commission.
Anke's main research interest is in the area of international relations, with a particular focus on the European Union and its member states’ foreign policies and especially the areas of energy policy and trade relations with third countries as well as external human rights and democracy promotion. Her doctoral thesis was concerned with the EU’s relations with the Russian Federation. It explored the underlying motivations for how national governments pursue their foreign policy towards Russia and sought to explain when and why they prefer to pursue their foreign policy objectives in cooperation with the other member states at the EU level and when and why they chose to achieve their goals bilaterally. The thesis paid particular attention to member states’ energy supply security policies, their attempts to resolve bilateral disputes with Russia and their efforts to promote democracy and human rights in Russia.
Anke’s post-doctoral research project (Med eller utan EU? Konsekvensen av nationella utrikespolitiska val för Europeiska unionens effektivitet som global aktör) builds on her PhD research and investigates why, how, and to what extent national foreign policy choices affect the EU´s capacity and effectiveness as a global actor. The EU’s relations with the Russian Federation serve as an illustrative case study to demonstrate the extent to which national governments’ decisions to cooperate, or not to cooperate, really impact, negatively or positively, on the EU’s ability to achieve the desired objectives in its relations with Russia and it seeks to clarify which other factors determine the EU’s capacity to ‘pull its weight’ in the international arena more generally speaking, and specifically its ability to influence Russia.
