Research interests

The past two decades have been characterized by significant changes in the global political order. The increasing awareness of the global environmental challenges we face has brought international cooperation in the field to the top of the global political agenda. Simultaneously, the weakening of the nation- state associated with globalization has paved the way for non-state actors to play an increasingly important role in global politics. Even the domain traditionally most associated with state power, international regime creation, has in recent years been subjected to their increasing influence. This has led some observers of international politis to argue that as long as there is no environmental leviathan, the distribution of power and the interests of key actors account for collective outcomes in international relations.

The role of transnational business actors in the process of regime formation has previously not been investigated to any significant degree. In my opinion, IR scholarship would be remiss not to look closer at the influence of this particular brand of non-state actors in global politics.

The purpose of my research is thus to describe how, to what extent and under which circumstances transnational business actors influence the formation, implementation and effectiveness of international environmental regimes.
