Current research project
The problem of emancipation in modern philosophy
and social theory
The purpose of this project is to analyze the problem
of emancipation in the work of Jürgen Habermas. The study investigates
how Habermas's concept of rationality and his understanding of emancipation
are related to the philosophical and socio-theoretical problems which
arise out of the movement of thought from Kant through to Marx and the
early Frankfurt School. Further, this part of Habermas's theory is problematized
by confronting it with the radical critique of reason formulated by thinkers
such as Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida. One of the project's main
objectives is to discuss the consequences of the democratization which
according to Habermas is essential to enable liberation-that is, whether
the possibility for emancipation necessarily involves an increased risk
of degeneration.
