Research and projects

Her research interests include public policy and policy governance, political participation and political representation, primarily in the empirical field of migration, integration and ethnic relations. The research involves organisational as well as comparative policy analysis.

She has been responsible for the Swedish part of the European project Diversity and Inclusion in Party Organisations DivPol (2013-2014), with participation of researchers from seven EU member states. The project examined factors within party organisations that facilitate or impede immigrant participation in institutions of representative democracy. At present, political assemblies reflect poorly the increasing ethnic diversity and growing share of persons of immigrant origin in European societies, including third country nationals (TCN). The project bridges the gap between research on political parties as gate-keepers providing essential ‘public goods’ and research on the political participation and representation of immigrants.

The contribution "Ethnic Inclusion or Exclusion in Representation? Local Candidate Selection in Sweden" (2011) focuses on mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion in Swedish political parties, in particular the internal party processes of selection and nomination of political candidates. Unlike much of the work that examines the numerical representation of ethnic and other minorities in political constituencies, this study investigates how more recent developments in Swedish political parties - the management rationale of being efficient modern organisations - affect their capacity to recruit and to integrate immigrant minorities as active participants in representative democracy.

´The Problem of Mismatch in Successful Cross-Sectoral Collaboration’ examines the EU programme EQUAL and the Swedish VINNVÄXT programme, representing a case of policy governance research. It addresses the impact of the management rationale—bureaucratic and entrepreneurial— on cross-sectoral collaboration and, in particular, how a mismatch in goals and norms between partners and the overall management rationale affect the capacity to recruit relevant actors and establish sustainable collaboration.

Maritta Soininen has been an affiliated research fellow (2006-2011) at the Institute for Research on Migration, Ethnicity and Society (FAS Centre of Excellence for Migration, Economy and Society) at Linköping University. During 2010-2011 she also acted as project leader responsible for Theme Work and Integration, which examined the outputs of European Social Foundation projects, and for Diversity Practice and Policy (2000-2005), a programme on international comparative research on multi-ethnic working life in transition. During 2003-2006 she led a comparative research project Diversity and Anti-Discrimination Policies in the Diverse World of Work (the Swedish Council for Working Life and Social Research). In 2002-2004 she conducted the transnational project Minority Representation in Police Organisations – Transnational Measures, funded by the Commission (Employment and Social Affairs DG).

In 2014 she served as an expert on a UKÄ (Swedish Higher Education Authority) panel for developing a national quality assessment system for doctoral programmes. In 2017 she contributed as an external reviewer to an international panel with the task of assessing the quality of Linnaeus University’s research strategy.
