Dissertation work

Two advisors are appointed to supervise the student's research. Students who have begun their dissertation work have the right to continuous consultations and are obliged to keep their advisor informed of their progress.

The doctoral student chooses the topic of the dissertation her- or himself. The dissertation topic is formally decided once the student presents a dissertation proposal that is critically examined at a general seminar but the topic can be changed even after this seminar. The proposal should contain a research plan and timetable, discuss the research problem and questions, review the relevant literature on the proposed topic, and specify the methods as well as sources and data to be used. The dissertation proposal is developed in connection with the introductory seminar (see ‘Seminars’).

Before the doctoral candidate publicly defends his/her doctoral dissertation after approximately four years of research, a complete dissertation manuscript must be subjected to critical scrutiny in a general seminar.

During their time in the graduate program doctoral students are encouraged to actively participate in national and international conferences and workshops: those of the Swedish Political Science Association, Nordic Political Science Association and European Consortium for Political Research as well as conferences within their own field of research. Furthermore, they are encouraged to spend at least one term at a university abroad.
