The Department of Political Science at Stockholm University is a place where scholars explore questions of democracy, political leadership, international relations, welfare state policy, social movements, human rights, European politics, violence against women, and many other subject areas.

Recent publications in 2009 include Ludvig Beckman, The Frontiers of Democracy - The Right to Vote and Its Limits; Jan Hallenberg, The Quest for Control - USA:s säkerhetspolitik efter den 11 september; and Cecilia Åse, Monarkins makt. Nationell gemenskap i svensk demokrati.
About 1500 students from Sweden and around the world take courses here, on subjects ranging from Swedish Politics to Gender and Development. The intermarriage between research interests and teaching competence is something we are particularly proud of.
Among the dissertation projects conducted by the graduate students at the Department we find Idris Ahmedis whose dissertation project aims to explain the U.S. policy of ”dual containment” toward Iran and Iraq, or Jenny Madestam who conducts research on the party leader culture of the Swedish Social Democrats and the Liberal Party.

The Department is one of the largest at Stockholm University. The research staff include 24 tenured professors and lecturers, three junior researchers, three post doc researchers and around 50 doctoral students. They are backed up by around ten administrative and technical personnel. The Department is a member of the European Consortium of Political Research, the Swedish Political Science Association and a number of other networks. Various scholars are also members of the International Political Science Association, American Political Science Association, among others.
Many of the scholars at the Department work closely together within our research profiles (see link to the left). Prominent scholars include Maud Eduards, Drude Dahlerup, Ulrika Mörth, Jonas Tallberg and many more.

Some, such as Tommy Möller, Merrick Tabor and Olof Ruin, are familiar faces to Swedish media consumers (see our press room for updates).
Others, such as Daniel Tarschys and Björn von Sydow, have also had distinguished careers in Swedish and European politics.
Furthermore, in the beginning of 2009 we had the pleasure to welcome a new Hierta professor at the Department: Michele Micheletti. Read more about the Hierta professorial chair »
Research carried out at the Department is funded by Vetenskapsrådet, Riksbankens Jubileumsfund, European Commission, among others.
Scholars have the possibility of keeping up-to-date on the latest research through on-line access to 5500 electronic journals and, in the Department’s Media Room, on the latest news from 15 national and global broadcasters.
If you are looking for a specific researcher or a research area you are welcome to visit our pages "Who conducts research on what?". We are also glad to welcome you to our press room, where you can see, hear and read the latest comments on current events made by our scholars in media.
