Anke Schmidt-Felzmann, post doc
Anke Schmidt-Felzmann joined the Department of Political Science at Stockholm University in mid-September 2011 as a postdoctoral researcher with a two year research grant from Vetenskapsrdet (Swedish Research Council). Prior to joining Stockholm University Anke worked for two years as a full-time Lecturer at Maastricht University where she taught in the European Studies programme. She defended her PhD thesis at the University of Glasgow and holds an MSc in International and European Politics from the University of Edinburgh. Anke's main research interest is in the area of international relations, with a particular focus on the European Union and its member states foreign policies. Her doctoral thesis was concerned with the EUs relations with the Russian Federation. It explored how national governments pursue their foreign policies towards Russia and sought to explain when and why they prefer to pursue national policy objectives in cooperation with the other member states at the EU level or bilaterally outside the EU framework. The thesis paid particular attention to member states energy supply security policies, to how they attempt to resolve their bilateral disputes with Russia and how they try and promote democracy and human rights in Russia. Ankes post-doctoral research project builds on her PhD research and investigates why, how, and to what extent national foreign policy choices affect the EUs capacity and effectiveness as a global actor, with its relations with Russia serving as an illustrative case study.
Eleonora Stolt was accepted as a Ph.D. student in the autumn of 2011. She describes her research as follows:
My planned PhD project focuses on the process of gender equality policy-making in the European Union, with particular attention to the work of the European parliament. For instance, I am interested in to what extent a political context beyond the nation state have the possibility to create conditions for political dialogues decoupled from the national premises related to gendered politics.
